How did you make the leap to your current role?
I began my journey late July 2017. My first website was on Wix and is still active. Once I found my niche which is ADHD and homeschooling, I purchased a domain at Wordpress. This isn’t the first time I started. I used to be an IPO for Ameriplan. While it didn’t last, I discovered that when I don’t play well with others (i.e. working for others) I found myself getting burned out all the time. I loved my co-workers but disliked the way employees are treated by big companies. You give up a lot of your life and free time and it’s never good enough.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I really wanted to be a writer after I discovered I had a talent for it. I didn’t have to be the prettiest, smartest, or fastest, I just had to use my words. Besides that, Wonder Woman!
What was your first job ever? Did it help you in your current role?
My first job was a secretary. I was inspired by the movie 9 to 5. I loved the way the secretaries stuck it to their horrible boss and ended up running the place. It helped me because I know what I always knew, women can do anything they set their minds to.
What made you want to start your business? What or who inspired you to do so?
My first marriage was at the age of 40 years behind my high school and college friends. Next thing I knew I was pregnant. Talk about surprised! I had a daughter from a previous relationship. I was a single mom and I grew up in a poor neighborhood so I know how to hustle. What motivated me to start my own business is I remember all the things I went through as a single parent and employers are the worst. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice by working for someone who didn’t care if my child got sick or if I wanted to have lunch with my child at school.
What does your job entail?
Currently, I’m a blogger, but I’m learning to build multiple streams of income through freelancing, affiliate marketing and independent contracting. I bid for jobs to write articles for magazines. I also guest posts on some sites to build my brand. I ran across Caitlin Pyle’s proofreading course which is perfect for a word nerd like myself. I’m also looking into a franchise as well as some part-time phone work.
How do you explain what you do to others?
I haven’t found a word for myself so right now I just say, blogger.
How long have you been doing this?
I’ve been doing for 4 years. I’ve stopped and started for many different reasons. Health, my son, my job, but after a situation at work, I decided to stop being scared and go for it.
What is a day for you like? What is your routine?
My day starts with a brisk walk around my neighborhood. I fix breakfast for my husband and son. After I get my husband off, I check my emails and Facebook for any updates. I homeschool my son. After that, I work on my business which includes sending pitches to companies who need my services as a blogger. I do my research for other business I can get into. I have to make an income, but this time I want to make my own rules.
I’m up from 7- 11 a,m. Monday-Thursday. Friday is kind of a free day so I edit my blog, create pins,. On the weekends, I do pretty much the same. Sunday I got to my WeightWatchers meeting and the rest of Sunday I try to reach out to my friends.
How do you end your workday?
Sometimes with a glass of Sangria, others just going to sleep with a Soduko puzzle.
How did you go about starting your business? What were some of the initial steps that you took?
I was determined to make this work so I scrubbed the Internet for good information. I found Elna Cain’s Write Your Way to 1K and knew I found what I needed to be successful.
I went in with both eyes opened and with realistic expectations. When I started my other blogs, I had this Field of Dreams attitude that if I write it they will come. Blogging is hard work and there is so much to learn. My initial steps started with changing my mindset. I knew I had to work hard to make this work for me and I’m learning so much.
What are your biggest responsibilities as an entrepreneur/freelancer?
My biggest responsibility is helping others. If I may borrow a reference from the movie Robots, see a need, fill a need. It’s not about getting people to read what you write, but giving them the answers to their problems.
What has been the hardest part of your transition?
The hardest part of my transition is the mindset. I’m human so I compare myself to successful bloggers who were about to quit their jobs in less than 6 months and who are making a substantial income. I keep reminding myself that everyone has a starting point and everyone’s journey is different. When it’s my time, it’s my time.
What has been the easiest part of your transition?
The easiest part of my transition is knowing I’m responsible for my success and my success isn’t based on a bunch of rules made up by people who don’t know my strengths and weaknesses and can change those rules any time they feel to suit their bottom line.
What keeps you motivated?
My kids and granddaughter. I want to show them how to be their own person.
How do you define success now?
I define it as waking up every day with a sense of peace.
How do you prevent burn out?
I love Netflix! There is always a movie, show, documentary, or something that can take my mind off just about anything. I also journal and spend time with my granddaughter.
What do you think is the most important characteristic to have for someone who wants to take a similar career route to yours?
The most important characteristic is to believe in yourself and be your own cheerleader. Friends and partners will doubt you for walking away from a stable job, home, marriage, or whatever. It’s not that they don’t believe in you, they’re scared for you, and what the change can do to you and them.
Yes, there will be people who flat out believe that you’re wasting your time and this is when you have to encourage yourself. Over a lifetime, most people eat the equivalent of an elephant. Do we eat it all in one bite? No. One step at a time. That’s all you can do. One step at a time.
What do you wish you knew before starting out on your own path?
I wish I knew about all the free help and it’s out there, you just have to look. I also wish I knew how to code. That’s an awesome skill to learn!
Did anyone help you in developing your own business?
No, but I reached out to people who knew the ropes and will continue to do so.
Do you have a work idol?
Bee Michele, she is so encouraging and such a wonderful role model. She’s a former schoolteacher turned events entrepreneur. She helps other entrepreneurs market themselves as well as brings entertainment to San Antonio, Texas. My other hero is Chef Vinyette Ervin. We used to work at the same call center. She left after HR refused to extend her leave for her son who was born prematurely at the time to start her own catering business.
Is there a working woman or man out there that you admire?
The person I admire of course is Oprah. Early in her career, she asked her producer for time off to promote The Color Purple, because, in her words, she said she was going to be big. He refused so she started her own company Harpo and the rest is history.
What is your favorite thing about the industry you work in?
I’ve been in love with writing since I was nine. I read Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and I wanted to do write. There is so much healing, learning, touching, feeling in words. Words can take you anywhere without leaving your home.
What are some tools that you can live without?
I do love Pinterest because it’s like free advertising, Grammarly keeps me in check when I write, Yoast SEO has taught me how to write blogs and Siteground for hosting.
What do you have on your desk or working space right now?
I have pictures of my family and my Raggedy Ann doll that belonged to my mother who passed away. My laptop, of course, mouse, and pencil and paper to jot down notes.
What do you want other women in similar situations to know about your chosen career path?
I want them to know they can do it! There’s nothing wrong with being a stay at home mom and I have the utmost respect. I did it for nearly three years and my hats are off to those to continue to do it. I’ve been a single mom raising a child alone and now a wife and mother again. Your dreams matter. Think about who you were or wanted to become before your marriage or kids, then take the steps to do it. If you can’t be that person, then find something that gives you that feeling. Your dreams matter.
Do you have any other additional key points that you think would be beneficial to readers?
Find a mentor. This person will walk you through the good, the bad, and the ugly of your chosen field. They are there for encouragement, support, and when you need it, a kick in the pants.
Journal or meditate. This doesn’t have to be to set goals, but rather clear your head to prepare yourself for the day.
Be flexible. You may not get your first client for months. In the meanwhile, focus your attention on sprucing up your website, Linked In account, Pinterest, etc. There are other things to do to help you until you get where you’re going. In other words, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Use your God-given woman talents and multi-task. Your real goal should be to make a life not living.
